Found a nail or screw in your tyre?

A small metal head in the tread raises a big question: can this tyre be saved? Sometimes a tread puncture can be repaired, but the visible object tells only part of the story. The position, extent of damage and condition inside the tyre all matter.

A photograph helps the enquiry

When the car is safely parked, a photograph of a visible object can help explain the problem. Identify the affected wheel and any pressure loss. Do not reach underneath the car or stand near passing traffic to obtain a picture.

Photograph the sidewall specification separately so a possible replacement can be checked.

Why location is more important than appearance

A puncture in the main tread area is assessed differently from damage towards the shoulder or sidewall. An apparently tiny entry point does not establish the path or extent of the damage. A professional also needs to consider the tyre's overall condition and previous repairs.

Where a permanent repair is being considered, examination inside the tyre is important. A booking made from a photo should therefore be an assessment request, rather than an assurance that a repair will be possible.

Explain what happened after you noticed it

Tell the team whether you discovered the object at home, after a warning light, or after the tyre went flat. Say if the vehicle has been driven since the pressure dropped, and mention any sealant or temporary repair already used. These details may change the fitter's advice and the work required.

An object still in place is not a reason to assume the tyre is safe for an onward journey. If it is flat or damaged, stop the journey safely and seek assistance.

Keep replacement an option in the plan

Supply the full size and relevant ratings so the team can check options if the tyre cannot be repaired. On Skye, also give the parked location, access notes and any travel deadline. Tyre availability, the appropriate work and the full quote are checked before a visit is agreed.

A LITTLE PREPARATION

Before you book

  • Identify the affected wheel and any warning light.
  • Photograph the object only from a safe position.
  • Share the full sidewall specification separately.
  • Disclose low-pressure driving, sealant or earlier repairs.
YOUR NEXT STEP

Your tyres, taken care of.

Tell us where you’ve safely stopped and what your vehicle needs. We’ll check availability and confirm your quote and arrival estimate.

GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions, answered.

Does a nail in the middle of the tread guarantee a repair?

No. Tread position is only one consideration. The fitter must assess the damage and tyre condition, including any hidden harm from driving under-inflated.

Should I remove the screw before the fitter arrives?

Leave an embedded object for the professional to assess. Do not pull it out or try a roadside repair to see whether the tyre will hold air.

Will sealant count as a permanent repair?

An emergency sealant is a temporary measure rather than a confirmed permanent repair. Tell the fitter which product was used so it can be included in the assessment.
