Run-flat tyre replacement on Skye: check the specification first

Run-flat technology changes the questions a fitter needs to ask after pressure loss. It does not make a tyre immune to damage or suitable for unlimited driving. Start with the markings on the actual tyre and the vehicle handbook, rather than assuming every run-flat has the same limits.

Run-flat is a construction feature, not just a size

A run-flat tyre may share its size with a conventional tyre while using a different construction. Manufacturer markings vary; Michelin, for example, uses ZP or EMT on relevant products. Include a clear sidewall photograph instead of relying only on the words run-flat in an enquiry.

Also provide the load and speed rating and identify the wheel. Different front and rear fitments can mean a matching tyre on one axle is not the specification needed on the other.

Avoid a universal distance or speed assumption

The permitted use after pressure loss depends on the tyre and vehicle instructions and the circumstances. An internet headline about a run-flat range is not permission to complete a particular journey. The load, damage and conditions can affect what is appropriate.

Tell the team when the warning appeared and approximately how far the vehicle has travelled since. Describe any vibration, visible damage or change in handling, and seek assistance rather than extending a journey on an assumption.

Repairability and replacement need separate checks

Run-flat repair policies differ between tyre manufacturers. Inspection and the history of pressure-loss driving are important; neither a repair nor an automatic replacement decision should be promised solely from the run-flat label.

A switch to conventional tyres also needs vehicle-specific advice. Run-flat fitments and pressure monitoring are part of the vehicle's specification. Do not ask for a different construction simply because its size appears to match or its quoted price is lower.

Check mobile suitability before reserving the visit

Provide the full specification, vehicle details and parked location on Skye. The team checks the tyre and whether suitable equipment, access and an appointment can be arranged. Explain any hire, lease or manufacturer requirements before a quote is agreed, and have the locking wheel nut key available if the vehicle uses one.

Before you book

  • Full size, ratings and the run-flat marking or photograph.
  • Vehicle model and affected front or rear wheel.

GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions, answered.

Are all run-flat punctures unrepairable?

Policies vary by manufacturer and tyre condition. A qualified professional must assess the tyre and the applicable repair guidance before agreeing a repair.

Can I replace a run-flat with an ordinary tyre?

Do not decide from the size alone. Ask for advice based on the vehicle's approved specification, tyre construction and pressure-monitoring arrangements.
