Tyre load and speed ratings: the details after the size

Two tyres can show the same main size but have different ratings or construction. When arranging a replacement, do not stop reading at the wheel diameter. The remaining markings help the team assess whether a tyre is suitable for the vehicle and the use it was designed for.

Understand the service description

In an example such as 205/55 R16 91V, the final number is a load index and the letter is a speed symbol. The load index refers to a defined load capacity; it is not a pressure setting. This example explains the format and is not a recommendation for your car.

The vehicle manufacturer's requirements remain the starting point for a replacement. Do not choose a speed rating only by the highest speed at which you intend to drive.

Include additional construction markings

Extra-load markings, often shown as XL or reinforced, are another part of the specification. Run-flat identification and vehicle-specific markings may also be relevant. A size-only search can miss these differences, so a clear photograph of the full sidewall is useful when asking for advice.

If your vehicle is a van, campervan, electric car or has been modified, say so. The team needs the actual vehicle and approved fitment, rather than an assumption based on its appearance.

Check each axle rather than copying one tyre

Some vehicles use different front and rear sizes. Identify the wheel that needs attention and provide the information from that tyre, while mentioning any differences elsewhere. Registration details can help identify the car but do not prove which wheels or tyres are fitted now.

If the current marking conflicts with the handbook or vehicle information, raise the discrepancy before ordering. The existing tyre should not automatically be treated as evidence that the fitment is correct.

Compare quotes for equivalent suitability

Ask what specification the quote covers, which tyre is being proposed and whether additional work is included. A useful comparison considers approved suitability as well as price. The team checks available appropriate options before agreeing the tyre and appointment; this guide does not promise any particular rating or brand is immediately available on Skye.

A LITTLE PREPARATION

Before you book

  • Send the full size and the following number-letter rating.
  • Include XL, run-flat and other relevant markings.
  • Identify the vehicle and the affected axle or wheel.
  • Ask about any mismatch before agreeing a replacement.
YOUR NEXT STEP

Choose a visit that fits your day. Share your vehicle and location, and we’ll confirm the right tyre, appointment and full quote.

GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions, answered.

Can I use a lower speed rating because I drive slowly?

Do not select a replacement on that basis. The tyre must be assessed against the vehicle manufacturer's requirements and any applicable specialist guidance.

Does a higher load index mean I can ignore tyre pressures?

No. The rating does not replace the vehicle manufacturer's pressure guidance for its fitment and load. Ask for clarification if the markings or requirements are unclear.
