Tyre help at Sconser: is your car on Skye or Raasay?

Sconser is the Skye end of the Raasay crossing. Make the island explicit before discussing tyre attendance: “at the Raasay ferry” can mean either shore, with different routes and practical arrangements for a visiting fitter.

Identify the shore and the vehicle position

CalMac identifies Sconser on Skye’s east coast as the crossing point for Raasay. Check the selected address and map. The opposite terminal may appear in results for the same journey; a route name alone is insufficient.

If you have already crossed, say that the vehicle is on Raasay. Do not select Sconser to obtain an arrival estimate for a car that is elsewhere. Any ferry travel, equipment carriage or attendance on another island needs separate assessment; a Skye tyre enquiry does not automatically confirm those arrangements.

Do not rely on a staffed terminal building

CalMac describes Sconser as an unattended slipway. That makes it useful to read the current operator information and speak to ferry staff about an immobilised car rather than assume a ticket office can organise access. Explain the actual stopping position, whether it affects a queue and which wheel has the problem.

The ferry approach and boarding space cannot simply become a work area. Ask about permission and access, then give dispatch the instructions you receive. If the vehicle is at a nearby property instead, send that entrance and parking position. A suitable road route does not by itself establish a suitable place to fit a tyre.

Send a specification that can be checked before travel

Provide the registration, affected wheel, complete sidewall marking and a clear photo where safe. Mention the locking wheel nut key and anything already used from the vehicle’s repair kit. For a campervan, add its weight and wheel layout so equipment and replacement suitability can be considered individually.

For rental approval, contact the hire company using your agreement’s assistance details. Keep its instructions available; ferry permission does not determine who may approve work or whether the rental provider will reimburse it.

Review the onward crossing after the tyre arrangement

Use current CalMac information for sailing and check-in details, and explain your intended travel when discussing the appointment. The fitter’s estimate applies to the accepted vehicle location. It does not reserve a sailing, arrange boarding or promise that a tyre problem will be resolved before the next crossing.

A LITTLE PREPARATION

Before you book

  • State clearly which island the car is on.
  • Check the map pin identifies the vehicle.
  • Explain any queue obstruction to ferry staff.
  • Prepare tyre details and rental-company approval.
YOUR NEXT STEP

GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions, answered.

Does a Sconser booking cover a car already on Raasay?

No automatic ferry attendance is included. State the Raasay location at the start so the travel, vehicle and working conditions can be assessed before an arrangement is accepted.

Can I assume someone at Sconser ticket office will meet the fitter?

CalMac describes an unattended slipway. Agree an authorised vehicle contact and check arrangements with the operator; staff cannot be assumed to provide keys or approval.
